Second grade knows the difference between warm and cool colors pretty well now thanks to this project. The students also understand a little bit about contrast of colors and how it is important to use in order to create a focal point in a painting.

Value of a pumpkin.
5th grade did a value test. The students had to come up with a composition using at least three pumpkins and a moon. They had to prove to me that they understood what value was. They had to show that they understand how a light reacts when it hits an object. Art tests are totally fun (at least to me).

R.O.Y. trees.
Second grade has been studying color and how it all works. This was a study on warm colors. The students needed to show that they knew warm colors by painting warm color trees. It turns out that the Fall colors are warm:) Happy Fall everyone.

Lines and shapes.
Kindergarten used scissors to cut different lines to create shapes. They have learned that lines are used to draw with as well as paint with and even cut with. The students are starting to realize that lines are very important in the art world. Now we just need to work on getting in line at the end of class;) Nice work Kindergarten.

The perfect Fall tree.
Third grade was given the challenge of painting the perfect Fall tree. I googled the perfect Fall tree painting and showed the students what google thought was the perfect Fall tree. We then discussed the different paintings and came to realize everyone is different and has a different idea of the perfect tree. After our discussion they just painted away....nice job third.

Piet Mondrian paintings.
Second grade learned about the artist Piet Mondrian. He mostly used the primary colors which is what we were learning about. Second grade students also learned through Piet that sometimes art can be incredibly simple. So we painted little Mondrians ourselves. Everyone was successful!

Fifth Grade Rock Garden.
Fifth grade always ends with a rock painting lesson. Each student leaves Westside by painting a rock and leaving it in the courtyard as a gift and a reminder of their experience as a wildcat. I tell them they can come back is thirty years and look for it......after they stop in the art room and say hi to the 70 year old Mr. Cleveland:)

Second grade finished their unit on community by painting cardinals at night. We chose the cardinal because in our community if you go to High School here in Sun Prairie you all become a cardinal. Go Cards!

Mouse Paint.
You want a simple way to teach Kindegarten how to mix primary colors to create secondary colors? Here is the book that you need. Unfortunately the book does not teach the kinders how to clean up the paint afterwards:) You are on your own for that!

Alphabetical color theory.
Kindergarten learned about color and how to mix colors by the layering technique. They also proved to me that they do in fact know their alphabet. Our goal was to create 26 different colors on our paper. This was a fun experiment. Some students even started to name the new colors they created.
