Second grade had a day to create miniature Chinese Character Books. We simply took a brush, ink, and paper and away we went. I had a sheet that they could copy off of...they were so into it.

Winter.....over.
So I had these wonderful snowman pieces up on my wall most of the winter, well they needed to come down because I am, simply put, tired of Winter. So I had multiple grade levels paint a sunset complete with a private island. Now my art room looks a lot warmer....actually I kind of feel like I am always on vacation when I am in my room!

Van Gogh "Starry Night".
First and second grade observed the "Starry Night" up close and painted their own version of it. We discussed Van Gogh as an artist and his style and how he felt at peace when he painted the "Starry Night" back in 1889. We used a little oil pastel and tempera for this one.

Van Gogh for everyone.
This week all my classes will be learning something different about the wonderful artist named Vincent Van Gogh. Yeah, he is the one that cut his own ear off. Each grade level will be learning a little about art history as well as character education. There is all kinds of things you can learn about this artist. The displays are rented from Teacher Discovery Travel Exhibits. I will post some of the projects the students create when they are finished.

"Ladder to the Moon" By Georgia O'Keeffe.
Second grade O'Keeffe paintings. These are totally spiritual don't you think. We discussed and learned about the artist's New Mexico years. These paintings will be part of a larger Westside art show over at the Sun Prairie Public Library in February.

Free choice drawing.
Free choice drawing is where it is at! I love the fact that students love free choice drawing time. It gives them to own their full artistic process. A fifth grader gave me this one....so of course I pinned it to the wall!

Fifth grade eye study.
My fifth grade students did an eye study where they learned about the anatomy of the human eye and how to draw through observation. We used the splattering and dripping technique with watercolor. We discussed composition and use of space as well. These sure are good LOOKING!
