Primary colors.

Red, Yellow, Blue are the primary colors that the first graders have learned about.  They had fun drawing stick figures doing dance moves.  We also discovered good use of space as well as moving lines.  So much learned from such a simple project.

Van Gogh or Van Westside?

Fifth grade learned about Van Gogh's sunflower series and then we painted through his inspiration.  We learned about contrast colors, tints and tones, shadows and highlights, as well as overall composition.  We also learned that mistakes are good because they give you direction that you never thought of.

The Dot by Peter Reynolds.

Every art teacher and their dog know what "The Dot" is.  It is a great story to use at the beginning of the school year because it tells the student's to be confident in who they are and what they can do!  First grade painted dots however they wanted in my class this week.  Here is a video on the book in case you are interested in the story.    http://youtu.be/t5mGeR4AQdM

Finally up and running.

Second grade learned the element of art called "space".  The students proved they can balance out their composition (I know, sounds complicated).  We also relearned the basics of getting our paints out and putting them away.  It was nice to get something up on the wall for display.

Here is the basics in my Art Room as far as rules go.  I found this on a little thing called Pinterest.  I teach a bunch of Ninjas.  Here is to a great school year!
